Entry #3 Slanted Reporting
There are many news articles out there that show a lot of signs of slanted reporting, but sometimes we may not even realize what they are doing. At times, authors can be pretty good at inserting slight signs of bias without scaring the reader away. For today's blog, I watched a short video on the Sky News channel on youtube that discussed Elon Musk's Neuralink company and what they are working on. Neuralink is developing a device that would be embedded in a person's brain, where it would record brain activity and potentially stimulate it. Tom Clarke from Sky News showed slight signs of bias throughout the video.
I was expecting for Tom Clarke to show the benefits along with the downsides of what Neuralink is trying to accomplish, but instead he made it pretty clear that he was all for the idea. Tom used pictures to show the viewer how the surgeries are performed. He did this to try and convince the viewer how successful the surgeries have been lately, and how there is nothing to fear. Tom even got the chance to try on a headset that would allow him to make movements digitally just by thinking about them. He also mentioned how the company's focus is to help patients regain function following a stroke. By saying that, Tom is able to get the viewer to agree with his opinion that Neuralink is improving people's lives. The last thing I noticed Tom did was include an interview from the Co-founder and Ceo of the company to help persuade the viewer. This would be considered a sign of ethos because a co-founder and Ceo would be considered trustworthy.
These are a few things I was able to catch from the video that showed slight signs of bias. Based off Tom's choices of rhetoric appeals, this could impact the audiences's opinion on the Neuralink company. Many people might be having a tough time deciding whether the company's focus is a good idea or not, but after watching Tom's video they may get their answer. Although Tom mentioned big names in the video, the fact that he did a slanted report on the company could really make the credibility of the company decrease. It is important for us citizens to be able to distinguish the difference between a credible news article and a slanted one so that we can form true opinions based off real and credible sources/facts.

You’re hitting the nail on the head about how sneaky bias can be in the media. It’s like we need a special set of glasses to see through the fog. Your breakdown of Tom Clarke’s report is a perfect example of why we need to keep our eyes peeled. It’s all about balance, and when a report is tipping the scales too much in one direction, like it seems with the Neuralink piece, we’re not getting the full story. It’s like we’re only hearing the good news without understanding the potential downsides or risks involved.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a fantastic job covering slanted angles. It's truly unfortunate that almost everything is skewed today. I feel like we really need an unbiased news source however it probably wouldn't do well. But I think you did a fantastic job at finding the skewed information in this video.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your point as it emphasizes the importance of recognizing bias in reporting, as it can significantly influence our views on things like Neuralink. It emphasizes the need for critical approach and consultation with sources before forming opinions.
